Pay with PromptPay Using Peanut — Coming Soon
Peanut is adding PromptPay support. Soon you'll be able to pay at merchants across Thailand directly from your Peanut balance. PromptPay has over 90 million registrations in a country of 72 million people, and its QR codes are posted at virtually every merchant — from 7-Eleven to street food carts to luxury malls. With Peanut's upcoming PromptPay integration, you'll tap into Thailand's cashless payment standard without needing a Thai bank account or long-term visa.
Thailand is one of the world's top destinations for tourists and digital nomads alike. Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and the islands draw millions of visitors every year. But paying like a local has always required a Thai bank account, which means a long-term visa most visitors don't have. Peanut is about to change that.
What Is PromptPay?
PromptPay is Thailand's national real-time payment system, operated by the Bank of Thailand and National ITMX. It is fully integrated into all major Thai banking apps, making it the country's de facto cashless payment standard.
The system uses a unified QR code standard — any banking app can scan any PromptPay QR code, regardless of which bank issued it. Payments settle instantly, 24/7/365, and are free for consumers. For person-to-person transfers, users send money using the recipient's phone number or national ID number.
PromptPay handles approximately 74 million daily transactions. Its QR codes are found at street food stalls, convenience stores, taxi drivers, night markets, and every major retailer. Thailand's government actively promoted PromptPay adoption, including distributing welfare payments through the system, which accelerated nationwide penetration.
PromptPay also leads in cross-border QR interoperability, with live or developing links to 8+ countries including Singapore, Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Hong Kong, and Laos.
How It Will Work
When Peanut adds PromptPay support, paying at Thai merchants will follow a straightforward flow:
How It Will Work
- 1
Open the Peanut app
Navigate to the payment section and select PromptPay.
- 2
Scan the PromptPay QR code
Point your camera at the QR code displayed by the merchant — the same code locals scan with their banking apps.
- 3
Review the payment details
See the merchant name, the amount in THB, and the equivalent charge from your Peanut balance at the current exchange rate.
- 4
Confirm and pay
Tap to confirm. The merchant receives baht instantly, and the charge deducts from your Peanut balance.
The merchant will see a standard PromptPay payment — they will not know Peanut is involved. Your digital dollar balance converts to THB behind the scenes at a competitive rate.
Where You Can Pay
PromptPay QR codes are ubiquitous across Thailand. Once Peanut supports PromptPay, you'll be able to pay at:
- Street food carts and market stalls — Thailand's famous street food scene runs on PromptPay QR codes
- Convenience stores — 7-Eleven (with over 13,000 locations), FamilyMart, and Lawson
- Supermarkets, malls, and department stores — Tops, Big C, Central, and more
- Restaurants, cafes, and bars — from rooftop cocktail bars to local noodle shops
- Taxis and tuk-tuks — many drivers display PromptPay QR codes
- Online merchants and delivery services — Grab, Foodpanda, Lazada, and Shopee
Whether you're in central Bangkok, the beaches of Phuket, the mountains of Chiang Mai, or the islands of Koh Samui, PromptPay coverage is extensive.
What You'll Need
To pay with PromptPay through Peanut once the integration launches:
- A Peanut account — download the app and create your account
- Identity verification — verify with your passport or national ID card (no Thai ID or long-term visa required). Verification takes under 2 minutes and is handled by Persona, a certified identity provider. Peanut never sees or stores your documents.
- A funded balance — deposit digital dollars via bank transfer or supported networks
- No Thai bank account needed — today, PromptPay requires a Thai bank account linked to a Thai phone number, and opening an account requires a long-term visa. Peanut removes this barrier entirely.
Info
Specific requirements and limits will be confirmed at launch. Peanut's general model applies: no payment fees, competitive exchange rates, and rate locks at the moment of payment.
Fees and Exchange Rate
Peanut charges no fees on payments. When paying with PromptPay through Peanut, you will pay the displayed exchange rate with no additional charges on top.
The Thai baht operates under a managed float by the Bank of Thailand. Currency exchange booths in tourist areas offer varying rates, and international cards often add surcharges. Peanut will offer a competitive rate that converts your digital dollar balance directly to THB, with the rate locking at the moment you confirm — no slippage after that.
Who This Is For
Peanut's PromptPay integration is built for anyone who needs to make payments in Thailand without a local bank account:
- Tourists — Thailand welcomes over 30 million visitors per year. PromptPay QR codes are everywhere, but tourists are currently locked out. Peanut unlocks access from your first day.
- Digital nomads — Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Koh Lanta are among the world's most popular remote work destinations. The Digital Nomad Visa (DTV) and Long-Term Resident (LTR) visa attract thousands of remote workers who need daily payment access.
- Expats on short-term visas — if you're in Thailand on a tourist visa or visa exemption, you can't open a bank account. Peanut bridges that gap.
- Cross-border travelers — Thailand's PromptPay already links to 8+ countries. Peanut extends that reach even further by letting anyone with a Peanut account pay into the PromptPay network.
