Pay with QRIS Using Peanut — Coming Soon
Peanut is adding QRIS support. Soon you'll be able to pay at merchants across Indonesia directly from your Peanut balance. QRIS (Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard) is Bank Indonesia's national unified QR payment system, connecting all major e-wallets and banks under one interoperable code. With Peanut's upcoming QRIS integration, you'll pay at millions of Indonesian merchants without needing a local e-wallet account, KTP, or Indonesian bank account.
Indonesia is one of the world's top destinations for tourists and digital nomads. Bali alone draws millions of visitors each year, and cities like Jakarta, Yogyakarta, and Bandung offer vibrant urban experiences. But paying like a local — through QR codes at warungs, cafes, and shops — has required a local e-wallet or bank account. Peanut is about to change that.
What Is QRIS?
QRIS is Indonesia's national QR payment standard, regulated and mandated by Bank Indonesia. Launched in 2019, it was created to unify the country's previously fragmented QR payment landscape, where GoPay, OVO, DANA, ShopeePay, and LinkAja each had their own incompatible QR codes.
With QRIS, a single QR code at any merchant works with every participating e-wallet and bank app. Merchants no longer need to display separate codes for each payment provider — one QRIS code handles them all. Payments settle instantly, and the system is fully interoperable across the entire financial ecosystem.
QRIS adoption accelerated significantly during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, and Bank Indonesia continues to push it as the backbone of Indonesia's cashless economy. Cross-border QR interoperability is also being developed, with links to Thailand's PromptPay, Malaysia's DuitNow, and Singapore's PayNow/NETS already in progress.
How It Will Work
When Peanut adds QRIS support, paying at Indonesian merchants will be straightforward:
How It Will Work
- 1
Open the Peanut app
Navigate to the payment section and select QRIS as your payment method.
- 2
Scan the QRIS code
Point your camera at the QRIS QR code displayed at the merchant — the same code that every local e-wallet and banking app uses.
- 3
Review the payment
See the merchant name, the amount in IDR, and the equivalent charge from your Peanut balance at the current exchange rate.
- 4
Confirm and pay
Tap to confirm. The merchant receives rupiah instantly, and the charge deducts from your Peanut balance.
The merchant will see a standard QRIS payment. Your digital dollar balance converts to IDR behind the scenes at a competitive rate.
Where You Can Pay
QRIS merchant coverage is growing rapidly across Indonesia:
- Warungs and street vendors — small local shops and food stalls that form the backbone of daily commerce
- Supermarkets and convenience stores — Indomaret, Alfamart, and major grocery chains
- Restaurants and cafes — from beachside warungs in Bali to urban restaurants in Jakarta
- Online merchants — e-commerce platforms and delivery services
- Transportation and parking — ride-hailing services and parking facilities
- Government services — fees, taxes, and public utilities
QRIS is accepted across Java, Bali, Sumatra, and other major islands. In tourist hotspots like Canggu, Ubud, and Seminyak, QR payments are common at restaurants, shops, and even small local eateries.
What You'll Need
To pay with QRIS through Peanut once the integration launches:
- A Peanut account — download the app and create your account
- Identity verification — verify with your passport or national ID card (no KTP or KITAS required). Verification takes under 2 minutes and is handled by Persona, a certified identity provider. Peanut never sees or stores your documents.
- A funded balance — deposit digital dollars via bank transfer or supported networks
- No local e-wallet or bank account needed — currently, using QRIS requires a local e-wallet (GoPay, OVO, DANA) or Indonesian bank app, all of which need a KTP or KITAS for full access. Peanut removes these barriers.
Info
Specific requirements and limits will be confirmed at launch. Peanut's general model applies: no payment fees, competitive exchange rates, and rate locks at the moment of payment.
Fees and Exchange Rate
Peanut charges no fees on payments. When paying via QRIS through Peanut, you will pay the displayed exchange rate with no additional charges.
The Indonesian rupiah is managed by Bank Indonesia. International cards in Indonesia often carry surcharges and unfavorable exchange rates. Peanut's model converts your digital dollar balance directly to IDR at a competitive rate, with no payment fees added on top.
The exchange rate locks at the moment you confirm — the amount shown on your screen is exactly what gets charged.
Who This Is For
Peanut's QRIS integration is designed for anyone making payments in Indonesia:
- Tourists in Bali and beyond — Bali is one of the world's most visited islands. QRIS codes are at every warung, surf shop, and beach club. Pay like a local instead of carrying cash or paying card surcharges.
- Digital nomads — Canggu, Ubud, and Seminyak are among the world's top remote work hubs. The Second Home Visa and Digital Nomad Visa provide pathways for extended stays, but banking access remains limited. Peanut bridges that gap.
- Business travelers — Jakarta, Surabaya, and other business centers are increasingly cashless. QRIS lets you pay at restaurants, taxis, and meeting venues seamlessly.
- Cross-border travelers from Southeast Asia — QRIS is building interoperability with Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore. Peanut extends that connectivity to anyone with a Peanut account.
