Pay with Bizum Using Peanut — Coming Soon
Peanut is adding Bizum support. Soon you'll be able to send money and pay merchants in Spain directly from your Peanut balance. Bizum has achieved near-universal adoption in Spain — "te hago un Bizum" has entered everyday vocabulary, and the system is integrated into virtually every Spanish banking app. With Peanut's upcoming Bizum integration, you'll join in on Spain's dominant payment system without needing a Spanish bank account or DNI.
Spain is a major gateway between Europe and Latin America, with strong travel corridors to Argentina and Brazil. Whether you're visiting Madrid, living as a digital nomad in Barcelona, or splitting dinner with Spanish friends, Bizum is how locals move money — and Peanut will let you use it too.
What Is Bizum?
Bizum is Spain's bank-integrated instant payment system, operated by a consortium of Spanish banks. It is not a standalone app — Bizum is built directly into 95% or more of Spanish banking apps, which is why adoption has been so widespread. Users identify themselves by phone number, and payments settle instantly between bank accounts.
Bizum's primary use case is person-to-person payments: splitting dinners, paying rent, group expenses, and settling up with friends. Merchant payments are growing, with online retailers and some physical locations accepting Bizum at checkout. The system also supports donations to NGOs and group collections.
What makes Bizum unique is its deep bank integration. Users don't download a new app or create a separate account — they simply activate Bizum within their existing banking app. Money moves directly between bank accounts, with no intermediate wallet or top-up step. This simplicity is why Bizum has become Spain's default way to send money between individuals.
How It Will Work
When Peanut adds Bizum support, sending money and paying in Spain will follow a straightforward flow:
How It Will Work
- 1
Open the Peanut app
Navigate to the payment section and select Bizum as your payment method.
- 2
Enter the recipient's details
For person-to-person payments, enter the recipient's phone number. For merchant payments, follow the checkout flow.
- 3
Review the payment
See the amount in EUR and the equivalent charge from your Peanut balance at the current exchange rate.
- 4
Confirm and send
Tap to confirm. The recipient receives euros instantly in their bank account, and the charge deducts from your Peanut balance.
The recipient will see a standard Bizum payment arriving in their bank account. They will not know Peanut is involved. Your digital dollar balance converts to EUR behind the scenes.
Where You Can Pay
Bizum's merchant network is growing, and its P2P reach is already extensive:
- Person-to-person payments — the primary use case. Split a dinner in Barcelona, pay your share of rent, or settle up after a group trip. Anyone in Spain with a bank account can receive Bizum payments.
- Online e-commerce — major Spanish retailers accept Bizum at checkout
- Physical retail — a growing number of shops and restaurants accept Bizum in-store
- Restaurants and hospitality — increasingly accepted in the service industry
- Bill splitting and group payments — Bizum is the default for shared expenses among friends in Spain
- NGO donations — several organizations accept Bizum contributions
While Bizum's merchant acceptance is not yet as universal as card payments, its P2P reach means you can settle up with anyone who has a Spanish bank account — which is virtually everyone in Spain.
What You'll Need
To use Bizum through Peanut once the integration launches:
- A Peanut account — download the app and create your account
- Identity verification — verify with your passport or national ID card (no Spanish DNI required). Verification takes under 2 minutes and is handled by Persona, a certified identity provider. Peanut never sees or stores your documents.
- A funded balance — deposit digital dollars via SEPA bank transfer (Spain is in the SEPA zone) or supported networks
- No Spanish bank account needed — today, Bizum requires an account at a participating Spanish bank. Peanut removes this requirement entirely.
Info
Specific requirements and limits will be confirmed at launch. Peanut's general model applies: no payment fees, competitive exchange rates, and rate locks at the moment of payment.
Fees and Exchange Rate
Peanut charges no fees on payments. When paying with Bizum through Peanut, you will pay the displayed exchange rate with no additional charges.
Spain is part of the SEPA zone, which means depositing EUR into your Peanut account is straightforward via SEPA bank transfer — also free. For users depositing in EUR and paying in EUR via Bizum, the only cost is the provider rate for the EUR-to-digital-dollar conversion, which is competitive with or better than traditional card and bank rates.
The rate locks at the moment you confirm your payment — no surprises after you tap confirm.
Who This Is For
Peanut's Bizum integration is designed for anyone who needs to send or receive money in Spain:
- Tourists visiting Spain — Bizum is how Spaniards split bills and settle up. If you're traveling with locals or meeting friends, you'll be able to Bizum them directly instead of fumbling with cash or bank transfers.
- Digital nomads in Spain — Barcelona and Madrid attract thousands of remote workers. Pay your coworking space, split rent with flatmates, or pay your local gym — all through Bizum.
- Latin Americans in Spain — Spain has deep cultural ties to Latin America, with a large diaspora. Peanut bridges both worlds: use Bizum in Spain, Mercado Pago in Argentina, and Pix in Brazil.
- European travelers — if you live anywhere in the SEPA zone, you can deposit EUR for free and use Bizum when visiting Spain.
