Peanut is adding DuitNow support. Soon you'll be able to pay at merchants across Malaysia by scanning a single unified QR code — directly from your Peanut balance, without needing a Malaysian bank account or MyKad. DuitNow is Malaysia's national real-time payment system, connecting all major banks and e-wallets under a single interoperable QR standard. Once the integration goes live, Peanut will plug you into Malaysia's payment network using your digital dollar balance.
Malaysia solved the QR fragmentation problem that plagues many countries. DuitNow's unified QR standard means one QR code works across all participating banks and e-wallets — Touch 'n Go, Boost, GrabPay, MAE, and every major bank. When Peanut adds DuitNow, you'll have the same seamless access that locals enjoy, without the local paperwork.
What Is DuitNow?
DuitNow is Malaysia's national real-time payment infrastructure, operated by Payments Network Malaysia (PayNet). It provides an interoperable QR payment standard that replaced competing proprietary QR formats, bringing all banks and e-wallets onto a single network. Any DuitNow-enabled app can pay any DuitNow QR code — it does not matter which bank or wallet the merchant uses.
Beyond QR payments, DuitNow supports proxy-based transfers using a DuitNow ID — your phone number, NRIC (national ID), passport number, or business registration number. This means you can send money to anyone using their phone number instead of bank account details. Payments settle in real time, 24/7.
DuitNow has also established cross-border QR payment links with Thailand (PromptPay), Singapore (PayNow), and Indonesia (QRIS), making it part of Southeast Asia's growing interconnected payment ecosystem.
Where You Can Pay
DuitNow QR is accepted across Malaysia:
- Supermarkets and convenience stores — major grocery chains and minimarkets
- Hawker stalls and food courts — the heart of Malaysian dining culture
- Restaurants and cafes — from mamak stalls to fine dining
- Retail shops and malls — clothing, electronics, and general merchandise
- Petrol stations — fuel and convenience purchases
- Online merchants — a growing acceptance channel
DuitNow QR is most widely adopted in urban areas — Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Johor Bahru, and Malacca — where e-wallet and banking app usage is high. Acceptance is growing in smaller cities and towns as PayNet continues expanding the merchant network. Cash remains common in rural areas and traditional markets.
Malaysia's DE Rantau program offers a digital nomad visa, attracting remote workers to Kuala Lumpur, Penang, and Langkawi with its low cost of living, strong infrastructure, and diverse food culture. But accessing Malaysia's payment ecosystem typically requires a MyKad or a work/residency visa to open a bank account. Peanut will bypass this requirement, letting digital nomads and visitors pay at any DuitNow merchant from day one.
How It Will Work
- 1
Open Peanut and select Pay
You'll open the Peanut app and tap Pay to activate the QR scanner.
- 2
Scan the DuitNow QR code
Point your camera at the merchant's DuitNow QR code. Peanut will read the unified QR code and pull the payment details — merchant name and amount in MYR.
- 3
Review your payment
You'll see the ringgit amount, the digital dollar equivalent, and the exchange rate. The rate will lock at the moment of confirmation.
- 4
Confirm and pay
Tap to confirm. The merchant will receive ringgit instantly. From their side, it will look like a standard DuitNow QR payment — Peanut is invisible to the merchant.
The exact payment flow will be finalized closer to launch. The steps above reflect how Peanut's existing QR payment integrations work and how the DuitNow integration is expected to function.
What You'll Need
When DuitNow support goes live, you'll need:
- A Peanut account with identity verification. Verify with your passport or national ID card from any country — under 2 minutes for most users. Your documents are handled securely and Peanut never sees or stores them.
- A funded digital dollar balance. Deposit from any exchange or wallet, or via bank transfer. All deposits are free.
- No Malaysian bank account or MyKad. You won't need a MyKad (Malaysian national ID), a local bank account, or an e-wallet. Just your passport and your Peanut balance.
Specific requirements and transaction limits will be confirmed at launch.
Fees & Exchange Rate
Peanut charges no fees on payments. When DuitNow support goes live, you'll pay at a competitive market exchange rate with no transaction fee, no foreign exchange fee, and no hidden charges.
Your digital dollars will convert to Malaysian ringgit at the moment of payment. The rate locks when you confirm — no slippage, no post-transaction adjustments. This is the same model that powers Peanut's existing payment integrations, where users get transparent, competitive rates without any additional fees on top.
Detailed rate comparisons and savings estimates for the Malaysia corridor will be published closer to launch.
