Pay with MB WAY Using Peanut — Coming Soon
Peanut is adding MB WAY support. Soon you'll be able to pay at merchants across Portugal directly from your Peanut balance. MB WAY is Portugal's leading mobile payment system, built on the trusted Multibanco infrastructure that connects 27 banks and over 12,000 ATMs. With over 5 million users and a 45% share of e-commerce transactions, MB WAY is how Portugal pays. Peanut's upcoming integration will let you use it without needing a Portuguese bank account or Cartao de Cidadao.
Portugal is a key corridor for Brazilian residents and travelers — approximately 485,000 Brazilians live in Portugal, representing about 31% of all foreign residents. Whether you're a Brazilian expat in Lisbon, a digital nomad in Porto, or a tourist exploring the Algarve, MB WAY through Peanut will let you pay the way locals pay.
What Is MB WAY?
MB WAY is a mobile payment system operated by SIBS, the same company behind Portugal's ubiquitous Multibanco ATM and payment network. It is integrated into most Portuguese banking apps, so users do not need a separate app — though a standalone MB WAY app also exists.
MB WAY supports three main use cases: QR code payments at physical merchants, instant person-to-person transfers, and online checkout. For in-store payments, you scan a QR code and confirm with your PIN or biometrics. For online purchases, you select MB WAY at checkout, enter your phone number, and approve the payment in the app.
The system is phone-number based — your mobile number is your payment identifier. Payments settle instantly and are linked directly to your bank account, with no intermediate wallet or top-up needed. MB WAY has grown rapidly in recent years, particularly for P2P transfers and online shopping, where it has become a popular alternative to entering card details.
How It Will Work
When Peanut adds MB WAY support, paying at Portuguese merchants will follow a simple flow:
How It Will Work
- 1
Open the Peanut app
Navigate to the payment section and select MB WAY as your payment method.
- 2
Scan the merchant's QR code or select MB WAY at online checkout
For in-store payments, scan the QR code. For online purchases, choose MB WAY at checkout.
- 3
Review the payment
See the merchant name, the amount in EUR, and the equivalent charge from your Peanut balance at the current exchange rate.
- 4
Confirm and pay
Tap to confirm. The merchant receives euros instantly, and the charge deducts from your Peanut balance.
The merchant will see a standard MB WAY payment. Your digital dollar balance converts to EUR behind the scenes at a competitive rate.
Where You Can Pay
MB WAY is widely accepted across Portugal:
- Supermarkets — Continente, Pingo Doce, Lidl, Aldi, and other major chains
- Restaurants, cafes, and bars — from traditional tascas to modern restaurants
- Retail shops and clothing stores — in shopping centers and high streets across the country
- Pharmacies — a common acceptance point in Portuguese daily life
- Online e-commerce — domestic retailers and some international sites accept MB WAY, capturing 45% of Portuguese e-commerce transactions
- Parking and public transport — growing acceptance in urban areas like Lisbon and Porto
- Person-to-person transfers — split bills with friends, pay rent, or settle shared expenses
MB WAY coverage spans from Lisbon and Porto to smaller cities and tourist destinations like the Algarve, Madeira, and the Azores.
What You'll Need
To pay with MB WAY through Peanut once the integration launches:
- A Peanut account — download the app and create your account
- Identity verification — verify with your passport or national ID card (no Cartao de Cidadao or NIF required). Verification takes under 2 minutes and is handled by Persona, a certified identity provider. Peanut never sees or stores your documents.
- A funded balance — deposit digital dollars via SEPA bank transfer (Portugal is in the SEPA zone) or supported networks
- No Portuguese bank account needed — today, MB WAY requires a bank account linked to the Multibanco system. Peanut removes this barrier entirely.
Info
Specific requirements will be confirmed at launch. Peanut's general model applies: no payment fees, competitive exchange rates, and rate locks at the moment of payment.
Fees and Exchange Rate
Peanut charges no fees on payments. When paying with MB WAY through Peanut, you will pay the displayed exchange rate with no additional charges.
Portugal is part of the SEPA zone, so depositing EUR into your Peanut account is simple and free via SEPA transfer. For users depositing in EUR and paying in EUR via MB WAY, the only cost is the provider rate for EUR-to-digital-dollar conversion, which is competitive with traditional banking rates.
The rate locks at the moment you confirm — no slippage after you tap confirm.
Who This Is For
Peanut's MB WAY integration is designed for anyone who needs to make payments in Portugal:
- Brazilian expats in Portugal — with approximately 485,000 Brazilian residents, Portugal has the largest Brazilian diaspora in Europe. Use MB WAY for daily payments in Portugal, and Pix for sending money home to Brazil — all through one app.
- Tourists visiting Portugal — explore Lisbon, Porto, and the Algarve while paying like a local. No need to carry cash or worry about card surcharges at small shops.
- Digital nomads — Lisbon's thriving startup and fintech ecosystem attracts remote workers from around the world. Pay for coworking spaces, meals, and rent with MB WAY.
- European travelers — deposit EUR for free via SEPA and use MB WAY when visiting Portugal, just like locals do.
