Pay with Swish Using Peanut — Coming Soon

Peanut is adding Swish support. Soon you'll pay at merchants across Sweden from your digital dollar balance — no Personnummer needed.

Peanut is adding Swish support. Soon you'll be able to pay at merchants across Sweden directly from your Peanut balance — without a Swedish bank account, Personnummer, or BankID. Swish has achieved near-universal adoption in Sweden, with over 8 million users in a country of 10.5 million. It is the standard way Swedes pay each other and pay at businesses. Once the integration goes live, Peanut will give you access to Swish payments using your digital dollar balance.

Sweden is one of the world's most cashless countries. Many businesses no longer accept cash at all — and some smaller merchants and services are Swish-only. Without a Personnummer, visitors and short-term residents are locked out of the country's primary payment method. Peanut will solve that problem by connecting your digital dollar balance to the Swish network without requiring any Swedish credentials.

What Is Swish?

Swish is a mobile payment system operated by Getswish AB, a consortium of Sweden's major banks — including Danske Bank, Handelsbanken, Nordea, SEB, and Swedbank. It enables real-time payments between bank accounts using phone numbers as identifiers. For merchant payments, customers scan QR codes at the point of sale. For online purchases, customers select Swish at checkout and authorize via the app.

Swish payments are secured with BankID, Sweden's national digital identity system, and settle instantly between bank accounts via the Riksbank's RIX system. There is no separate wallet — funds move directly between bank accounts.

The word "Swisha" has become a Swedish verb meaning "to pay" or "to transfer money," which tells you everything about how deeply Swish is embedded in Swedish daily life. With over 8 million active users, Swish is a core piece of Sweden's financial infrastructure.

Currently, Swish requires a Swedish bank account and BankID, which in turn requires a Personnummer. Obtaining a Personnummer requires registering with the Swedish Tax Agency, which requires a valid reason for staying 12 or more months. This creates a significant barrier for tourists, business travelers, and short-term visitors who need to pay at Swish-only businesses. Peanut will remove this barrier entirely.

Where You Can Pay

Swish is accepted nearly everywhere in Sweden:

  • Supermarkets — ICA, Coop, Hemkop, Willys, and other grocery chains
  • Restaurants, cafes, and bars — from fine dining to casual fika spots
  • Street vendors and flea markets — QR codes at outdoor markets and pop-up stalls
  • Retail stores and boutiques — clothing, electronics, home goods
  • Online e-commerce — growing rapidly as a checkout option
  • Charity donations and church collections — Swish is the default donation method
  • Public transport — accepted in some regions for fare payments

In major cities like Stockholm, Gothenburg, and Malmo, Swish acceptance is nearly universal. Some smaller businesses are Swish-only, making it difficult to pay without access to the network.

How It Will Work

  1. 1

    Open Peanut and select Pay

You'll open the Peanut app and initiate a Swish payment.

  2. 2

Scan the merchant's Swish QR code

Point your camera at the Swish QR code displayed at the merchant. Peanut will read the code and pull the payment details.

  3. 3

    Review your payment

You'll see the kronor amount, the digital dollar equivalent, and the exchange rate. The rate will lock when you confirm.

  4. 4

    Confirm and pay

Tap to confirm. The merchant will receive kronor instantly. From their side, it will look like a standard Swish payment.

The exact payment flow — including how Peanut handles the BankID authentication layer — will be confirmed closer to launch. The steps above describe the general experience based on Peanut's existing payment integrations.

What You'll Need

When Swish support goes live, you'll need:

  • A Peanut account with identity verification. Verify with your passport or national ID card from any country — under 2 minutes for most users. Your documents are handled securely and Peanut never sees or stores them.
  • A funded digital dollar balance. Deposit from any exchange or wallet, or via SEPA bank transfer from anywhere in Europe. All deposits are free.
  • No Personnummer or Swedish bank account. You won't need a Swedish personal identity number, BankID, or a Swedish bank account. Just your passport and your Peanut balance.

Specific requirements and any transaction limits will be confirmed at launch.

Fees & Exchange Rate

Peanut charges no fees on payments. When Swish support goes live, you'll pay at a competitive market exchange rate with no transaction fee and no hidden charges.

Your digital dollars will convert to Swedish kronor at the moment of payment. The rate locks when you confirm — no slippage after tapping pay. Sweden is part of the SEPA zone, so European users can deposit via SEPA for free, making the end-to-end flow seamless even though Sweden uses the krona instead of the euro.

Detailed rate comparisons and savings estimates for the Sweden corridor will be published closer to launch.
