Peanut Is Coming to Spain
Pay with Bizum, send money to anyone, and access Spain's local payment systems — no Spanish DNI required.
Spain runs on Bizum. Splitting a dinner in Madrid, paying your share of rent in Barcelona, settling up after a group trip — "te hago un Bizum" has become part of everyday Spanish life, with over 25 million users. But Bizum requires a Spanish bank account at a participating bank, which means foreigners, tourists, and recent arrivals are left out of the way Spain actually moves money.
Peanut will change that. When local spending launches in Spain, you will be able to pay through Bizum and send money to anyone in the country — without needing a Spanish DNI, a local bank account, or a Spanish phone number. Your balance will stay in digital dollars until you spend, converting to euros at the real market rate.
Spain also serves as a natural gateway to Latin America. With deep cultural and linguistic ties to Argentina, Spain-to-Argentina is one of Europe's strongest travel corridors. Peanut already lets you spend in Argentina via Mercado Pago — and soon, it will let you pay locally in Spain as well.
How It Will Work

What Payment Methods Are Coming
Bizum
Bizum is Spain's dominant mobile payment system, integrated into virtually every Spanish banking app. With over 25 million users, Bizum has achieved near-universal adoption for peer-to-peer transfers — splitting dinners, paying rent shares, and settling group expenses. Merchant payments are also growing, with acceptance at Spanish online retailers, restaurants, and an increasing number of physical stores.
When Peanut integrates Bizum, you will be able to send instant payments to anyone with a Spanish phone number and pay at participating merchants. The recipient will see a normal Bizum payment. No Spanish DNI required, no local bank account needed. Bizum's strength is its deep bank integration — users do not need a separate app or wallet, and payments settle instantly between bank accounts.
Bizum supports P2P transfers, merchant payments, and online checkout. While P2P remains the primary use case, merchant acceptance is expanding through e-commerce and physical retail.
What to Expect
Spain is part of the eurozone, so your Peanut balance will convert from digital dollars to euros when you spend. SEPA deposits are free and most arrive in under 20 minutes, giving you a fast and cost-effective way to fund your account from any European bank.
Peanut will convert your digital dollars to euros at the real market rate. The rate locks at the moment of payment — no slippage, no hidden markups. For users coming from outside the eurozone (UK, US, Latin America), this means avoiding the card company's foreign transaction fees and exchange rate markups that typically add 1-3% to every purchase.
Who Will Use Peanut in Spain
Tourists and Travelers
Spain is one of Europe's most visited countries. If you are visiting from outside the eurozone — the UK, the US, or Latin America — every card payment comes with foreign transaction fees and unfavorable exchange rates. Peanut will let you pay with Bizum at the real rate, from the day you arrive. No Spanish bank account, no DNI, no paperwork.
Digital Nomads and Expats
Barcelona, Madrid, Valencia, and the Canary Islands attract a growing community of remote workers and long-term residents. Opening a Spanish bank account takes time and paperwork, and without one, you cannot use Bizum. Peanut will give you Bizum access with just your passport — split bills with friends, pay your share of the apartment, and stop being the person who always has to pay in cash.
People Traveling to Latin America
Spain has the strongest cultural and linguistic connection to Argentina of any European country. If you travel between Spain and Argentina, Peanut is built for you. You can already pay with Mercado Pago in Argentina — and soon, you will be able to pay with Bizum in Spain too. One app, two continents, local payment systems in both.
