Peanut Is Coming to Sweden

Pay with Swish in one of the world's most cashless countries — no Personnummer or Swedish bank account needed.

Sweden is one of the world's most cashless countries. Many businesses no longer accept cash at all. Card payments and Swish — Sweden's dominant mobile payment app — cover virtually all daily transactions, from public transit to street vendors. Over 8 million Swedes use Swish in a population of 10.5 million. "Swisha" has become a Swedish verb meaning "to pay." But Swish requires a Swedish bank account and BankID, both of which require a Personnummer (personal identity number). Getting a Personnummer means registering with the Swedish Tax Agency and having a valid reason for staying 12 or more months. For tourists, short-term visitors, and even some new residents, Swish is simply not available.

This creates a real problem. When many merchants are Swish-only and cash is declining, visitors face situations where they literally cannot pay. Peanut will solve this. When we launch in Sweden, you will be able to pay via Swish at merchants across the country — without a Personnummer, without a Swedish bank account, and without BankID. Just verify with your passport. Your digital dollars will convert to kronor at the market rate, and you will access the payment method that practically every Swede uses every single day.

How It Will Work

  1. 1

    Deposit from anywhere

Send digital dollars from any exchange or wallet via Solana, Arbitrum, Base, Tron, or Ethereum. Gas fees covered. Or deposit via SEPA (free, EUR-only, typically under 20 minutes) or wire transfer. All deposits are free.

  2. 2

    Your balance stays in dollars

Your balance will be held in digital dollars until you spend. Convert to kronor only at the moment of payment.

  3. 3

    Pay with Swish

Scan a merchant's Swish QR code or send to a phone number for P2P payments. Your dollars will convert to SEK at the market rate. No fees from Peanut.

  4. 4

    Instant settlement

The merchant or recipient will receive kronor instantly. Swish payments settle in real time between bank accounts via the Riksbank's RIX system.

What Payment Methods Are Coming

Swish

Swish is Sweden's near-universal mobile payment system, operated by Getswish AB — a consortium of Sweden's major banks (Danske Bank, Handelsbanken, Lansforsakringar, Nordea, SEB, Swedbank). It is phone-number-based: your Swedish mobile number is your Swish identifier. Payments are secured with BankID — Sweden's national digital identity system. Funds move directly between bank accounts in real time.

Swish is accepted at supermarkets (ICA, Coop, Hemkop, Willys), restaurants, cafes, bars, street vendors, flea markets, retail stores, boutiques, online e-commerce, charity donations, church collections, and even some public transport. In many Swedish cities, Swish is not just an option — it is the only way to pay at certain establishments that have stopped accepting cash.

How it will work with Peanut: Open the Peanut app and scan the merchant's Swish QR code for in-store payments. For person-to-person payments, enter the recipient's phone number. Confirm — payment arrives instantly. For online purchases, select Swish at checkout and confirm in the Peanut app.

No Personnummer or BankID needed. Swish requires a Swedish bank account and BankID, both of which require a Personnummer — a personal identity number issued to people registered as living in Sweden for 12+ months. Peanut will bypass all of these requirements. Verify with your passport in under 2 minutes and start paying with Swish.

Exchange Rate: What to Expect

The Swedish krona is a freely floating currency managed by the Riksbank. While the SEK has been relatively stable against the EUR, it has experienced some depreciation in recent years. Credit cards work in Sweden, but foreign transaction fees of 2-4% and exchange rate markups add up — especially when you are paying for everything digitally because cash is not an option.

Peanut will convert digital dollars to kronor at the market rate. Sweden is in the SEPA zone, so European users can deposit euros via SEPA for free. The direct conversion path means fewer markup layers than cards or traditional transfer services.

Rate lock: The rate will lock at the moment of payment. What you see is what you pay.

No fees. Peanut will charge nothing on deposits, Swish payments, or withdrawals. Gas fees on network transactions are covered.

Who Will Use Peanut in Sweden

Tourists and Short-Term Visitors

You arrive in Stockholm. You want to buy a coffee, take public transit, or shop at a market. The vendor says "cash or Swish only" — and you have neither. Your credit card is not accepted. This scenario is increasingly common in Sweden, one of the few countries where going cashless can actually leave you unable to pay at certain places.

Peanut will give you Swish access from the moment you arrive. No waiting weeks for a Personnummer, no opening a Swedish bank account, no BankID registration. Verify with your passport and pay at any Swish merchant — from your first fika to your last dinner before the flight home.

Cross-Border Travelers (UK, Germany)

Sweden is a popular destination for travelers from the UK and Germany. Whether you are visiting for business, tourism, or exploring the Scandinavian lifestyle, the Personnummer wall blocks you from the payment method locals rely on. Cards work at most places, but the 2-4% foreign transaction fees are frustrating — especially in a country where you pay digitally for everything.

Peanut will let you deposit via SEPA (for Europeans) or supported networks, and pay with Swish across Sweden at the market rate. No friction, no card markups, no cash-hunting in a nearly cashless society.
