Send Money to Thailand with Peanut — Coming Soon
Peanut is expanding to Thailand. Soon you will be able to send money to anyone in Thailand and have them spend locally using PromptPay, the country's ubiquitous QR payment system with over 90 million registrations and 74 million daily transactions. The recipient will not need a Thai bank account or long-term visa to receive and spend money through Peanut. Just a passport and the Peanut app.
Thailand is one of the world's top destinations for tourists and digital nomads. Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Koh Lanta attract millions of visitors each year. PromptPay QR codes are posted at virtually every merchant — from 7-Eleven to street food stalls to luxury malls. But accessing PromptPay requires a Thai bank account, which requires a long-term visa. Tourists on 30 or 60-day exemptions are locked out of the cashless payment system everyone else uses. Peanut will change that.
Why Peanut Will Be the Best Way to Send Money to Thailand
No Fees
Peanut charges nothing on deposits, transfers, or spending. Whether you fund your account via ACH from a US bank, SEPA from a European bank, or digital dollars from an exchange, the deposit is free. Sending to the recipient is free. Spending in Thailand via PromptPay will be free. Compare that to the alternatives:
- Wise: 0.4-1.5% in additional charges on every transfer
- PayPal: 3-4% cross-border fee, plus an unfavorable exchange rate markup
- Western Union: $5-$15+ flat fee per transfer, plus a rate markup built into the rate
For tourists spending $2,000-$5,000 over a month-long trip, traditional payment methods cost an extra $60-$200 in fees and poor exchange rates.
Better Exchange Rate
Peanut's exchange rate model converts digital dollars directly to the local currency at the market rate, bypassing the markups that traditional providers embed. While the exact rate mechanism for THB is being finalized, the approach eliminates the 0.5-2% exchange rate markup that services like Wise and credit cards add on top.
The Thai baht operates under a managed float by the Bank of Thailand. Currency exchange booths in tourist areas offer competitive rates, but they vary widely — and carrying large amounts of cash comes with its own risks. Peanut's model will deliver a consistent, transparent rate directly through the app.
Instant Local Spending via PromptPay
Once Peanut launches in Thailand, recipients will be able to pay instantly by scanning PromptPay QR codes. PromptPay is everywhere in Thailand:
- Street food carts and market stalls — printed QR codes at every vendor
- Convenience stores: 7-Eleven, FamilyMart
- Supermarkets, malls, and department stores
- Restaurants, cafes, and bars
- Taxis and tuk-tuks
- Online merchants and delivery services
PromptPay is operated by the Bank of Thailand and National ITMX. It uses a unified QR standard — any banking app can pay any PromptPay QR. Payments settle instantly, 24/7/365, at zero cost for consumers.
No Thai Bank Account Needed
Info
PromptPay normally requires a Thai bank account, which in turn requires a long-term visa — a work permit, retirement visa, education visa, or Thailand Elite visa. Tourists on 30 or 60-day visa exemptions cannot open bank accounts or register for PromptPay. This means they are stuck paying with cash or credit cards that charge 3-4% in foreign transaction fees.
Peanut will bypass this entirely. Recipients and travelers verify with any passport or national ID card. No Thai bank account, no long-term visa, no Thai ID number needed. Digital nomads in Bangkok and Chiang Mai who have been waiting months for bank account access can start paying like a local from day one.
How It Will Work
- 1
Sign up and verify your identity
Create a Peanut account and complete identity verification. Submit a photo of your passport or national ID card plus a selfie — the process takes under 2 minutes for most users. No Thai bank account or visa required.
- 2
Deposit funds
Fund your account using the method that fits your location. US users deposit via ACH (free, 1-3 business days) or digital dollars. European users deposit via SEPA (free, 90% under 20 minutes). Australian users send digital dollars from a local exchange. Anyone can send USDC, USDT, or DAI on Solana, Arbitrum, Base, Tron, Avalanche, Polygon, or Ethereum — all deposits are free and arrive in minutes.
- 3
Send to the recipient (or spend yourself)
If sending to someone in Thailand, the recipient creates their own Peanut account and verifies with a passport. Send them money directly — Peanut-to-Peanut transfers arrive instantly. If you are the one traveling to Thailand, spend directly from your own account.
- 4
Spend locally via PromptPay
Open the Peanut app, scan a PromptPay QR code at any merchant, review the payment in THB, and confirm. The merchant receives baht instantly. The merchant sees a normal PromptPay payment — they have no idea Peanut is involved.
What the Recipient Will Be Able to Do
PromptPay QR Payments
PromptPay is Thailand's national real-time payment system, operated by the Bank of Thailand and National ITMX. When Peanut integrates with PromptPay, recipients will be able to:
- Scan QR codes at any merchant — PromptPay QR codes are posted at virtually every point of sale in Thailand, from street food stalls to shopping malls
- Send P2P payments — transfer money to anyone using their phone number or national ID number linked to PromptPay
- Pay online — select PromptPay at checkout for online purchases and delivery services
PromptPay has over 90 million registrations in a country of 72 million people — a penetration rate that exceeds 100% due to multiple registrations. With 74 million daily transactions, it is one of the most actively used payment systems in Southeast Asia. The unified QR standard means any banking app can scan any PromptPay QR.
Thailand's government has heavily promoted PromptPay adoption, including distributing welfare payments through the system. The result is near-universal merchant acceptance that extends far beyond major retailers to the smallest street vendors.
Cross-Border QR Potential
PromptPay has cross-border QR interoperability with 8+ countries including Singapore (PayNow), Japan, Indonesia (QRIS), Malaysia (DuitNow), Vietnam, Cambodia, Hong Kong, and Laos. As Peanut expands across Southeast Asia, the network effects will multiply.
Bank Withdrawal
Recipients will also be able to withdraw their Peanut balance to a local Thai bank account for rent, bills, and other expenses.
Digital Dollar Withdrawal
Recipients who prefer to hold digital dollars can withdraw USDC, USDT, or DAI to any external wallet on supported networks. This is available today — even before the Thailand spending integration launches.
