Do You Need a Mercado Pago Account to Pay in Argentina?
No. You do not need a Mercado Pago account to pay at merchants in Argentina. Peanut scans Mercado Pago QR codes directly from the app. The merchant sees a normal Mercado Pago payment, but you pay from your Peanut balance. No DNI, no Argentine bank account, no Mercado Pago app needed.
Why Mercado Pago Is Hard for Foreigners
Mercado Pago is the dominant payment system in Argentina, accepted at over 1,000,000 merchants including supermarkets like Carrefour and Coto, restaurants, cafes, kiosks, pharmacies, and street food vendors. But setting up a Mercado Pago account as a foreigner is nearly impossible.
To create a Mercado Pago account, you normally need:
- A DNI (Documento Nacional de Identidad), Argentina's national ID
- An Argentine phone number
- A local bank account linked to a CBU or CVU
Foreigners cannot get a DNI without legal residency. Without a DNI, you cannot open a bank account. Without a bank account, you cannot fund Mercado Pago. This creates a wall that locks out tourists, digital nomads, and short-term visitors from the most common way to pay in Argentina.
How Peanut Bypasses This
Peanut works differently. Instead of requiring you to create a Mercado Pago account, the app reads the same QR codes that Mercado Pago uses. When you scan a merchant's QR, Peanut processes the payment on your behalf. The merchant receives pesos instantly in their Mercado Pago account, and they have no idea the payment came from Peanut.
This means you get access to the entire Mercado Pago merchant network without needing any Argentine documentation.
How to Pay with Mercado Pago QR Using Peanut
- 1
Verify your identity
Open the app and complete identity verification using your passport or national ID card. This takes under 2 minutes for most users and is a one-time process. Peanut accepts passports from any country.
- 2
Fund your Peanut balance
Deposit digital dollars to your account. You can deposit via bank transfer (SEPA, ACH, wire) or from an exchange. Deposits are free.
- 3
Find a Mercado Pago QR code
Look for the printed QR sticker at the merchant's point of sale or an on-screen QR display. These are at virtually every shop, restaurant, and kiosk in Argentina.
- 4
Scan the QR code
Open the Peanut app, tap "Pay," and point your camera at the QR code. The app reads the Mercado Pago QR automatically.
- 5
Review and confirm
You will see the merchant name, the amount in Argentine pesos, and the exchange rate. Confirm the payment. The merchant receives pesos instantly.
What You Get
Paying through Peanut gives you access to the same merchant network that locals use, with some additional advantages:
- 1,000,000+ merchants across Argentina, from supermarkets to street vendors
- The real exchange rate, not the tourist card rate. In Argentina, this means the dólar cripto rate, which is typically 5-8% better than what credit cards offer (estimate, as of 2026)
- No fees from Peanut on payments
- Instant settlement for the merchant
- Your balance is held in digital dollars until you spend it, so it does not lose value between deposit and purchase
Info
Verification Details
Peanut uses Persona for identity verification, the same provider used by Square and Robinhood. The process works like this:
- Upload a photo of your passport or national ID card (any nationality)
- Take a quick selfie
- Most users are verified automatically in under 2 minutes
Peanut never sees or stores your documents. Persona holds them securely (SOC 2 Type 2, GDPR-compliant, ISO 27001), and Peanut only receives a yes/no result.
If automated verification is inconclusive, manual review takes 1-3 business days. You can retry with better photos if needed.
Transaction Limits
For users paying with QR in Argentina, the monthly limit is $2,000 USD. This covers QR payments, deposits, and withdrawals combined. The limit resets at the start of each calendar month and can be increased by submitting additional documentation.
Foreign users (not locally verified) also have a $2,000 per-transaction limit for QR payments.
