Peanut Is Coming to Indonesia

Pay with QRIS at millions of merchants, send money to anyone, and skip the KTP requirement — just your passport.

Indonesia's payment landscape has been transformed by QRIS — Bank Indonesia's national unified QR standard that connects every major e-wallet and bank under one interoperable system. GoPay, OVO, DANA, ShopeePay, and LinkAja all work with QRIS, and the QR codes are everywhere — at warungs, restaurants, Indomaret and Alfamart stores, and increasingly at street vendors. But accessing these payment systems requires a KTP (Indonesian national ID) for full verification, and foreigners without a KITAS (residency permit) are limited to basic wallet functionality at best.

Peanut will change that. When local spending launches in Indonesia, you will be able to scan QRIS QR codes at merchants across the country and send money to anyone — without needing a KTP, a KITAS, or a local bank account. Your digital dollar balance will convert to Indonesian rupiah at the real market rate at the moment of payment.

Indonesia is also one of the world's top digital nomad destinations. Bali — especially Canggu, Ubud, and Seminyak — draws remote workers from around the globe. The payment access problem is one of the biggest friction points for everyone who visits or lives there.

How It Will Work

  1. 1

    Deposit funds

Add money to your Peanut balance from your bank via SEPA, ACH, or wire transfer — or send digital dollars from any major exchange. All deposits are free.

  2. 2

Your balance stays in digital dollars

Your funds will be held in digital dollars until you are ready to spend. No exposure to rupiah fluctuations while your money sits in your account.

  3. 3

    Pay with QRIS

When Peanut launches local spending in Indonesia, you will scan QRIS QR codes at participating merchants — from Bali cafes to Jakarta supermarkets. Your digital dollars will convert to rupiah at the moment of payment.

  4. 4

    Send money to anyone

Share a Peanut Link with anyone in Indonesia. They will claim the funds and withdraw to their bank account or e-wallet — no Peanut account required on their end.

What Payment Methods Are Coming

QRIS (Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard)

QRIS is Indonesia's national unified QR payment standard, regulated by Bank Indonesia and launched in 2019. It replaced the fragmented landscape of competing QR formats by connecting all major e-wallets (GoPay, OVO, DANA, ShopeePay, LinkAja) and banks under a single interoperable standard. One QRIS QR code works with any participating app — customers choose their preferred wallet or bank at the moment of payment.

When Peanut integrates QRIS, you will be able to scan QR codes at merchants across Indonesia — warungs, supermarkets (Indomaret, Alfamart), restaurants, cafes, transportation, and government services. The merchant will see a normal QRIS payment. No KTP required, no KITAS, no local bank account or e-wallet needed on your end.

QRIS is growing rapidly, driven by Bank Indonesia's push toward a cashless economy. The system also has cross-border QR interoperability in development with Thailand (PromptPay), Malaysia (DuitNow), and Singapore (PayNow/NETS), making it a hub for Southeast Asian payment connectivity.

Info

You will not need a KTP (Kartu Tanda Penduduk) or KITAS (residency permit) to use Peanut in Indonesia. Verify with your passport from any country in under two minutes — whether you are on a tourist visa, B211A, or just passing through.

What to Expect

The Indonesian rupiah is managed by Bank Indonesia with relatively controlled movements. For foreign visitors, the main challenge is access to digital payment systems rather than exchange rate volatility. Credit cards from abroad incur foreign transaction fees of 1-3%, and many smaller merchants in Indonesia do not accept cards at all — it is QRIS or cash.

Peanut will convert your digital dollars to Indonesian rupiah at the real market rate. The rate locks at the moment of payment — what you see is what you pay. No hidden markups, no foreign transaction fees. For visitors from the US, Australia, and Singapore — the top source countries — this means paying the real rate at every merchant, from a beachfront restaurant in Bali to a warung in Yogyakarta.

Who Will Use Peanut in Indonesia

Digital Nomads in Bali

Bali — Canggu, Ubud, and Seminyak — is one of the world's top digital nomad destinations. The Second Home Visa (B211A) and upcoming Digital Nomad Visa provide pathways for extended stays, but banking access remains limited for non-residents. Without a KTP, you cannot fully verify an Indonesian e-wallet, which means you are stuck paying with cash or a foreign card with markups. Peanut will give you full QRIS access with just your passport — pay at cafes, coworking spaces, restaurants, and shops the same way locals do.

Tourists

Indonesia welcomes millions of visitors to Bali, Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Lombok, and the Komodo Islands. QRIS QR codes are increasingly the standard way to pay, but tourists cannot access the e-wallets that scan them. Cash works but means exchange booth markups and the inconvenience of carrying bills. Peanut will let you scan QRIS codes from day one, at the real rate.

Cross-Border Travelers from Southeast Asia

Indonesia's QRIS has cross-border QR links with Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore. If you travel between these countries, Peanut will eventually work across all of them — one app for the entire Southeast Asian QR payment ecosystem. Pay with PromptPay QR in Thailand, DuitNow in Malaysia, and QRIS in Indonesia, all from a single Peanut balance.
