Peanut is adding MoMo support. Soon you'll pay at merchants across Vietnam from your digital dollar balance — no local phone number needed.

Peanut is adding MoMo support. Soon you'll be able to pay at merchants across Vietnam directly from your Peanut balance — without needing a Vietnamese phone number, local bank account, or TIN. MoMo is Vietnam's most popular mobile wallet with approximately 69% active wallet penetration. It handles in-store QR payments, online shopping, bill payments, and peer-to-peer transfers. Once the integration goes live, Peanut will connect you to Vietnam's dominant payment network using your digital dollar balance.

Vietnam's QR payment ecosystem is one of the fastest-growing in Southeast Asia. Through VietQR, an interoperable QR standard, approximately 85% of merchants accept digital payments. But accessing this ecosystem as a foreigner is difficult — MoMo requires a Vietnamese phone number and bank account. Peanut will remove those barriers, giving you access to pay at Vietnamese merchants without any local credentials.

What Is MoMo?

MoMo is a standalone mobile wallet — not tied to a single bank — that has become Vietnam's dominant digital payment method. It supports QR-based payments at the point of sale, peer-to-peer transfers via phone number, online payments at e-commerce checkouts, and bill payments for utilities and services.

MoMo is part of the VietQR ecosystem, an interoperable QR payment standard that connects banks and wallets across Vietnam. This interoperability means a single QR code at a merchant can be paid from multiple apps, creating broad coverage at the point of sale. MoMo wallets can be funded via bank transfer, linked bank account, or cash top-up at agent locations.

Beyond payments, MoMo also offers financial services including savings products, insurance, and micro-lending — making it a super-app for Vietnamese consumers. Its aggressive loyalty programs, cashback offers, and gamification features drive high engagement and daily usage.

Vietnam is a growing destination for digital nomads, with Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, and Hanoi offering an affordable cost of living and vibrant cultural experiences. But banking access for short-stay visitors is extremely limited — opening a Vietnamese bank account requires a long-term visa or work permit, and MoMo registration requires a Vietnamese phone number and bank account. Peanut will bypass these barriers entirely, giving visitors and remote workers direct access to Vietnam's QR payment ecosystem.

Where You Can Pay

MoMo and the VietQR ecosystem cover approximately 85% of merchants across Vietnam:

  • Convenience stores and supermarkets — Circle K, VinMart, and other chains
  • Restaurants, cafes, and street food — from pho stalls to rooftop bars
  • Online shopping platforms — Shopee, Tiki, Lazada, and more
  • Ride-hailing — Grab, Be, and other transport services
  • Utility and bill payments — electricity, water, internet, phone
  • Entertainment and ticketing — cinemas, events, and attractions

MoMo is widely used in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Da Nang, and other major cities. Cash still plays a role at traditional markets, smaller street food vendors outside major cities, and in rural areas — but QR payment adoption is accelerating rapidly.

How It Will Work

  1. 1

    Open Peanut and select Pay

You'll open the Peanut app and tap Pay to activate the QR scanner.

  2. 2

    Scan the merchant's QR code

Point your camera at the MoMo or VietQR code displayed at the merchant. Peanut will read the code and pull the payment details.

  3. 3

    Review your payment

You'll see the VND amount, the digital dollar equivalent, and the exchange rate. The rate will lock at the moment of confirmation.

  4. 4

    Confirm and pay

Tap to confirm. The merchant will receive Vietnamese dong instantly. From their side, it will look like a standard MoMo or VietQR payment.

The exact payment flow will be confirmed closer to launch. The steps above reflect how Peanut's existing QR payment integrations work and how the MoMo integration is expected to function.

What You'll Need

When MoMo support goes live, you'll need:

  • A Peanut account with identity verification. Verify with your passport or national ID card from any country — under 2 minutes for most users. Your documents are handled securely and Peanut never sees or stores them.
  • A funded digital dollar balance. Deposit from any exchange or wallet, or via bank transfer. All deposits are free.
  • No Vietnamese phone number, bank account, or TIN. You won't need a local phone number, a Vietnamese bank account, or a Tax Identification Number. Just your passport and your Peanut balance.

Specific requirements and transaction limits will be confirmed at launch.

Fees & Exchange Rate

Peanut charges no fees on payments. When MoMo support goes live, you'll pay at a competitive market exchange rate with no transaction fee and no hidden charges.

Your digital dollars will convert to Vietnamese dong at the moment of payment. The rate locks when you confirm — no slippage, no post-transaction adjustments. Vietnam's VND is a managed currency, so Peanut's competitive market rate will provide transparency and value compared to the cash-exchange rates most tourists rely on.

Detailed rate comparisons and savings estimates for the Vietnam corridor will be published closer to launch.
