Peanut Is Coming to Tanzania
Send money to anyone via M-Pesa — Tanzania's leading mobile money system. No local ID needed. Sign up to get notified.
Tanzania is one of the world's leading mobile money markets. M-Pesa, operated by Vodacom (Safaricom's sister company), has over 30 million registered accounts in a country of roughly 65 million people. Mobile money agents are ubiquitous — even in rural areas far from banks. Person-to-person transfers, merchant payments, bill payments, and salary disbursements all flow through M-Pesa and competing services like Tigo Pesa (now MoMo by MTN) and Airtel Money. The Tanzania-Kenya corridor is a major cross-border payment route, and the UK-Tanzania remittance corridor is growing.
Peanut will plug into this ecosystem. When we launch in Tanzania, you will be able to send money directly to any M-Pesa account — instantly, at the market rate. No Tanzanian National ID needed on the sender's side. For the Tanzanian diaspora in the UK and for tourists visiting Kilimanjaro, Zanzibar, the Serengeti, and Ngorongoro Crater, Peanut will make moving money into Tanzania simple and affordable.

What Payment Methods Are Coming
M-Pesa
M-Pesa in Tanzania is operated by Vodacom, sharing infrastructure and design with Safaricom's M-Pesa in Kenya. With over 30 million registered accounts, it is Tanzania's leading mobile money system. The platform supports person-to-person transfers, merchant payments, bill payments (electricity, water, internet), and salary disbursements.
Tanzania is one of the world's most mature mobile money markets. Beyond M-Pesa, Tigo Pesa (now MoMo by MTN) and Airtel Money have significant market share. Mobile money agents are ubiquitous across the country, providing cash-in and cash-out services even in remote areas.
The Tanzania-Kenya corridor is especially strong — M-Pesa enables direct mobile money transfers between the two countries, driven by trade, travel, and shared cultural ties.
How it will work with Peanut: Open the Peanut app, enter the recipient's M-Pesa phone number or a merchant's till number. Review the amount in TZS and the exchange rate. Confirm — funds arrive instantly.
No local ID needed (sender side). Peanut will accept passport verification from any country. You do not need a Tanzanian National ID to send money via Peanut.

Exchange Rate: What to Expect
The Tanzanian shilling operates under a managed float, with the Bank of Tanzania intervening to smooth volatility. The currency has experienced gradual depreciation over time. Traditional remittance services add 5-8% in combined fees and markups on the UK-Tanzania corridor.
Peanut will convert digital dollars to shillings at the market rate — without the markup layers that eat into every transfer through traditional services.
Rate lock: The rate will lock at the moment of transfer. No slippage.
No fees. Peanut will charge nothing on deposits, M-Pesa transfers, or withdrawals. Gas fees are covered.

Who Will Use Peanut in Tanzania
Cross-Border Travel (Kenya-Tanzania)
The Tanzania-Kenya corridor is a major cross-border route, driven by trade, tourism (safari circuits that span both countries), and shared cultural ties. M-Pesa connects the two countries with direct mobile money transfers. Peanut will let you hold one balance in digital dollars and send to either country — M-Pesa in Kenya or M-Pesa in Tanzania — as integrations go live.
Remittances (UK)
Tanzania's growing diaspora in the UK sends money home to support families. Traditional services charge 5-8% and transfers can take hours. Peanut will let you send from the UK directly to an M-Pesa account in Tanzania — instantly, at the market rate. More money reaches family, faster.
Tourists
Tanzania attracts visitors to Kilimanjaro, Zanzibar, the Serengeti, and Ngorongoro Crater. Card acceptance is limited outside major hotels — tourists typically rely on USD cash and mobile money. Peanut will give you M-Pesa access without needing a Vodacom SIM or Tanzanian National ID, making it easier to pay for local services, tips, and small purchases.
