Peanut Is Coming to Thailand
Pay with PromptPay QR codes, send money to anyone in Thailand, and get better rates — no Thai bank account required.
Thailand has gone cashless faster than almost any country in Southeast Asia. PromptPay QR codes are posted at virtually every merchant — from 7-Eleven counters to street food carts, tuk-tuk drivers to luxury malls. With over 90 million registrations in a country of 72 million people and 74 million daily transactions, PromptPay is how Thailand pays. But PromptPay requires a Thai bank account, which requires a long-term visa — meaning tourists on 30 or 60-day entries and short-term visitors are completely locked out.
Peanut will change that. When local spending launches in Thailand, you will be able to scan PromptPay QR codes at merchants across the country and send money to anyone — without needing a Thai bank account, a Thai ID, or a long-term visa. Your digital dollar balance will convert to Thai baht at the real market rate at the moment of payment.
How It Will Work
- 1
Deposit funds
Add money to your Peanut balance from your bank via SEPA, ACH, or wire transfer — or send digital dollars from any major exchange. All deposits are free.
- 2
Your balance stays in digital dollars
Your funds will be held in digital dollars until you are ready to spend. No exposure to baht fluctuations while your money sits in your account.
- 3
Pay with PromptPay
When Peanut launches local spending in Thailand, you will scan PromptPay QR codes at merchants everywhere — street food, convenience stores, restaurants, and shops. Your digital dollars will convert to baht at the moment of payment.
- 4
Send money to anyone
Share a Peanut Link with anyone in Thailand. They will claim the funds and withdraw to their bank account — no Peanut account required on their end.
What Payment Methods Are Coming
PromptPay
PromptPay is Thailand's national real-time payment system, operated by the Bank of Thailand and National ITMX. With over 90 million registrations and 74 million daily transactions, it is the country's de facto cashless payment standard. PromptPay uses a unified QR code system — any Thai banking app can pay any PromptPay QR — and processes payments in real time, 24/7/365.
When Peanut integrates PromptPay, you will be able to scan the QR codes that are ubiquitous across Thailand. Street food carts, convenience stores (7-Eleven, FamilyMart), supermarkets, restaurants, cafes, bars, taxis, and tuk-tuks — they all display PromptPay QR codes. The merchant will see a normal PromptPay payment. No Thai bank account required, no Thai ID, no long-term visa needed on your end.
PromptPay also has cross-border QR interoperability with 8+ countries including Singapore, Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Hong Kong, and Laos — positioning it at the center of Southeast Asia's connected payment ecosystem.

What to Expect
The Thai baht operates under a managed float by the Bank of Thailand. The baht is generally stable against major currencies but sensitive to tourism flows and global risk sentiment. Currency exchange booths in tourist areas offer competitive rates but vary significantly — and using them means carrying cash.
Peanut will convert your digital dollars to Thai baht at the real market rate. The rate locks at the moment of payment — what you see is what you pay. No haggling at exchange booths, no card company markups, no foreign transaction fees. For travelers from the US, UK, and Australia — the top source countries — this means saving 1-3% on every purchase compared to using a foreign credit card.
Who Will Use Peanut in Thailand
Tourists
Thailand is one of the world's top tourist destinations, welcoming tens of millions of visitors every year. The moment you arrive, you face the PromptPay wall: QR codes are everywhere but you cannot use them without a Thai bank account. Foreign credit cards work at hotels and large retailers, but with markups. Cash means finding exchange booths and carrying bills. Peanut will give you PromptPay access from day one — scan QR codes at street food stalls, pay your hotel, settle up at restaurants, all at the real rate.
Digital Nomads
Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Koh Lanta are among the world's top digital nomad destinations. Thailand's Long-Term Resident (LTR) visa and Digital Nomad Visa (DTV) attract remote workers for extended stays. But even with a visa, opening a Thai bank account takes effort and paperwork. Peanut will give you PromptPay access with just your passport — no bank account needed. Pay for your coworking space, food, and apartment without the banking hassle.
Expats and Long-Term Residents
If you live in Thailand long-term, you may already have a bank account. But if you receive income from abroad — from the US, UK, or Australia — getting that money into your Thai account means international wire fees and exchange rate markups. Peanut will let you deposit from abroad and withdraw to your Thai account at a better rate, or simply pay directly via PromptPay.
